5 Tips to 600,000 Hits in Three Weeks
By admin | April 2, 2007
Here’s 5 of the tricks I used to get over 600,000 hits within a period of three weeks for bobmeetsworld.com
- Timing
Timing is essential as you have to take into account that your blog has a worldwide audience. To figure out where you will get the most hits from, check your statistics to determine where your biggest group of readers is located and at what time they tend to log on to your site. Then go and setup the “post-per-email” feature in wordpress. Many email clients come with an option where you can have it send an email at preset time.
Obviously some breaking news articles should be posted as soon as possible and I suggest you use a BlackBerry or something if you feel the urge.
- Content
Lets face it, content is king and the main reason people actually visit a blog. So it’s your job to make sure that you have plenty of it.
If you are looking to provide information for a specific kind of reader, you will most likely only get that specific type of reader.
Try to mix you content with some more popular stories or videos so you will reach out for a bigger group of people. Chances are some of them will stick around and will get interested in what you have to say about your favourite topic.
- Exposure
Exposure is a thing I can’t stress enough. No matter how wonderful, witty or brilliant your article is, it will only become valuable if someone reads it.
Notify the right sites so they can spread the word for you.
Just to name a few: Digg.com - del.icio.us - reddit.com - Corank.com - Netscape.com
Another way is to make sure your update will get picked up by blog directories like Technorati by having your wordpress automagically ping these sites for you.
- Networking
You are not alone in blogland. Infact you are about 0,000000000001% of the population these days and you should know your neighbours. They might have been around a bit longer and will have a loyal group of readers of whom a few might be interested in what you have to say. Linking to a particular article from another blog will help the both of you since these links are one of the things pagerank and technorati rank gets measured on.
Always make sure you credit the source if you quote some information.
Remember what goes around comes around so try to get some good karma going.
- Be Prepared
What renders a fantastic idea useless? If you forget it.
One of the things you could do is carry a paper notebook with you at all times and scribble down any visions for a great article that hit you during the day. Another thing I have started to do is synch my iPod before I leave for work with my favourite RSS feeds via iFeedPod (Windows users can use iGadget)
This gives me the possibility to browse through new articles while I’m on my way to work in the train and adds about 40 minutes of researchtime a day. Again, if you come across a hot item you want to post straight away, I suggest you get a BlackBerry![]()
So boys and girls, that’s basically what I did during the first three weeks of BobmeetsWorld and at this moment I am seeing an average of 1100 unique visits a day and a daily increase of links to the blog.
Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with.

Is technorati still supporting the automatic pinging within wordpress? I don’t see the pinging configuration for wordpress anymore in this page http://technorati.com/developers/ping/.

Alright. I took notes on this article and let’s just say….I am excited and up for this challenge. Most of my other blogs are on one particular topic (I know, I know….a big no no
)
I just started my personal blog tonight and am looking forward to what I can do with this baby! Thank you so much for your insights Bob (is that you’re REAL name?).
I’ll update you in a few weeks.

[…] As you can see they are simple but effective tips not only for a starting blogger but also for the more experienced one. Some advise I might want to add from personal experience is Timing. If you have a great post of which you are quite certain a lot of people would be interested in reading and submitting to social bookmarking sites like digg or reddit, you need to make sure that when you publish it on your blog, your biggest reader group is awake. Check your statistics to see which country has the highest percentage in visitors for your site and then synchronize yourself with their time zone. Your statistics software will also show you what hour of the day your traffic peaks so be sure to post just before your peak time. If you don’t do this, chances are people will not even know about your fantastic article because they were asleep and by the time they woke up, your post has long gone from the new submitted posts. You can find more tips on my blog for a huge traffic boost. […]

are these 600,000 hits or are they 600,000 unique visits?
there is a difference and when i see people talking about them i never know if they mean unique or just hits because looking at every page on a site counts as a hit :\ thats where some misconceptions lay.
