A Clean Slate

By admin | July 4, 2007

Most of you haven’t even noticed probably, but yesterday BobmeetsWorld was offline for a couple of hours. Or you were looking at the standard Wordpress install. I had decided to wipe my account from the server and build everything from scratch. Why? Well everyone must know that feeling..when you’ve installed something a while ago and little bugs start showing up here and there because you’ve done upgrade upon upgrade. I just wanted to start with a clean slate and a fresh install. Of course I did a backup of the 414 posts and 2,156 comments, I wasn’t planning on starting over with them too! So anyway, turned out the mySQL database was about 40Mb and since I have a shit internet connection, I was staring at my phpmyadmin screen for the best part of an hour, hoping nothing would go wrong. Thankfully everything worked but I still had a lot of tweaking to do. over 20 plugins and editing the theme’s php files. So far so good. Wordpress is updated to the latest and greatest and the bugs that were annoying me before have disappeared.

Do you guys backup you blogs on a regular base? I can’t imagine how pissed off I’d be when my stuff would crash and I’d lose all my data…

Losing my blog would be a nightmare!

I back up once in a while, but probably not as regularly as I should. I’ve started keeping a “staging” blog (with the same template) where I can test new code and changes for a day or two before putting them into my main blog.

That’s helped me catch some bugs before they caused any problems.

After reading about all the bugs you can get i have decided i would be best to back up data… something i have not done in the passed. It could prove very valuable if i end up catching some bug that is out there. Very good advice and something i will be doing from now on.

Can you guys show me how to do a backup of my blog? I’d like to do a fresh install too, but I’m afraid I’ll nuke the whole thing.
