(gb) Shark Fishing with Dogs?!?
By Nathan Metzger | May 1, 2007
So bob is pimping his blog out with lots of guest posts so I thought I would jump on the bandwagon. When trying to figure out what Bob’s readers like to see I found his Monkeys on Racing Dogs, Animal Cruelty post. A synapse fired and I came up with the perfect post along these lines since I like shark fishing.
Apparently on the French-controlled island of Réunion, right off the eastern coast of Africa, fisherman are skewering dogs to use as shark bait. The labrador pictured at the left was actually someones pet. 2 other stray dogs were also photographed by a film crew. All three dogs were baited the exact same way.
I love shark fishing more than anyone around, but tossing Lasie out for a Great White to munch on is just a little bit ridiculous. However, since the stray population is so bad in Africa why not humanely let the stray dogs complete the circle of life? It’s certainly better than making more strays.

I had heard about it but never went to look it up since I cannot stand animal cruelty. This is a clear example how cultures can have a different value of things. I see your point where you say they are part of the circle of life, but if they are going to be used as bait it would be more “humane” to kill them before hooking them.
Obviously this is the way of living over there and I can’t judge them from my western background.

This is terrible!
It must be one of the cruelest and non efficient way to do it..

yes, it’s rather disturbing being a dog owner.

I actually saw this picture back about a year ago and didn’t have the time to investigate it. I just assumed it was photoshoped and laughed it off as a joke. Anyway, yesterday I was checking ’shark bait’ as its a keyword I’m trying to rank for and saw this story and was flabbergasted. I’m total agree this is completely cruel and inhumane.

I have not been able to get that image out of my head. That is such a horrible act. I just keep seeing this poor dog with hooks in its nose. It is sick! This is totally an inhumane way of treating another living thing. There is so much of that happening all over the world too. I hope never to see anything like that again.
