Get Nearly 300 RSS Readers in Three Weeks
By admin | May 27, 2007
If you check your blog stats for the day on MyBlogLog, there is always a little section down beneath where it lists a top ten of most clicked links in your communities. (See 1st screenshot)
I usually don’t pay much attention to these but today I noticed the number one spot was taken by an RSS Feed URL. This would not be weird if the other 9 links wouldn’t have been popular topics like warez and videos.

After a quick look on the Feed’s domain I found that robinsongo.com has a standard theme, no working archives link and an empty “about” page.
Curious as I am, I had a sneak peak to see when the domain as regged and to my surprise it’s not even one month old! (See 2nd screenshot, click to enlarge)
Hovering over the RSS Subscribe button, MyBlogLog shows how many clicks were made today and I had to look twice when I saw there were 282 clicks just today! However there are only 131 subscribers show if you lookup the feedburner wiglet (*At the time of this writing, it might have changed now)

So this raises a few questions in my mind;
- Is this blogger working the stats? He’s got 94 Technorati links and the first one was just 19 days ago!
- Is there a problem with MyBlogLog?
- Is this someone who had successful blogs before and just really knows what he’s talking about?
If this is for real I will be subscribing to see what makes the blog so successful. I have been trying to get more RSS subscribers for three months now and although the numbers keep increasing, it’s still no JohnChow number ![]()
One thing which I see in his technorati info is that he seems to get linked a lot on blog carnivals so I will be definitely looking into those.
-Update: 320 clicks an hour later-
-Update: 517 clicks today but less subscribers than yesterday with 128 ??? I’m starting to think Kumiko is right.
Don`t want to miss a thing? Just subscribe to the full RSS feed :)!

Thanks for this Bob. And honestly, I’m impressed by your research and scrutinization of my blog and i like your articles here, that made me subscribe to your feed.
Moreover, you’re right about blog carnivals, in my opinion, submitting to carnivals is the easiest way to get links! =)
To answer your questions,
1. the technorati links are legitimate.
2. there’s no problem with mybloglog.
3. I’ve never had successful blogs before but i do know what I’m talking about, IMO, it’s about being practical.
cheers and all the best!

No, there’s some serious statistic manipulation going on there.
The Technorati links are legitimate and actually not that hard to achieve through blog carnivals (I’m a big fan of carnivals!) but the numbers on the blog are way off.
Looking at his pageviews count for popular posts, you’d think they’d been on Digg’s frontpage twice yet the Alexa graph shows no traffic spike and traffic is actually half of Bobmeetsworld. I know how many pageviews I get on my site and there’s no way he’s getting those numbers.
Mybloglog may not have any problems but I’m guessing he’s clicking the link himself 500 times a day in order to get it to the top of the “what’s hot” list. 90% or readers who click an RSS link will only do so if they want to subscribe. The subscription numbers are far too low for the click count.
I’m guessing he’s playing the “success breeds success” angle and hoping that when visitors come and see those numbers they’ll think they’re on a big site and subscribe so in that respect he knows what he’s doing.
But if you’re spending your time clicking your own links 500 times, you’ve really got to question how long people will stick around.

Kumiko is right!

hey kumiko, you’re right about the page loads thing, but if you’ll notice, if you refresh my main page, the article you’re going to read currently will not get an increase in hit count. yes, i do refresh my own pages.
regarding mybloglog, no, i’m not clicking my own links, get your facts right first, how did it top the page of ‘what my members clicked on other sites’? they were clicked by members of bob’s community and i’m not even a member. but ofcourse not all those are from mybloglog savvy people.
cheers!
