Juvenile Rights
By admin | December 29, 2007
Its very important that kids who get into trouble to be held accountable. However, Its also important that they not be taken advantage of. Whenever one is facing the prospect of losing their liberty, juveniles should have the same rights as adult such as the right to bail, the right to a jury trial and so on. Yet, walk into almost any juvenile court in the United States, and kids are constantly denied these fundamental rights.
More often than not, the judge is the sole trier of fact. In many states, the Juvenile Laws are tough as children as young as eight year old are being prosecuted. At what age do kids know the difference between right and wrong? Many kids suffer from attention deficit disorder, and are bipolar, and experience impulse control. One Los Angeles Juvenile Attorney feels that minors are at a disadvantage when it comes to court proceedings. Kids facing the exposure of going to prison should have the right to a jury trial as adults. In addition to prison exposure, kids convicted of sex crimes for example face the possibility of registering as a sex offender for life in many states.
